Shopify vs Squarespace: choosing the right platform

Shopify and Squarespace are two of the most popular ecommerce platforms for smaller brands. Both are designed for ease of use, but they take different approaches. Here's a detailed comparison to help you decide.

Design and aesthetics

Squarespace wins on design. Templates are professionally crafted, modern, and beautiful out of the box. Your store looks polished immediately, with minimal effort. Shopify templates are good, but many require more customization to achieve that level of visual polish.

If beautiful design and immediate visual impact are your top priority, Squarespace has the edge. But if you want a unique, custom look, Shopify's flexibility wins. Shopify's app ecosystem includes design tools and custom theme developers.

Ease of use

Both platforms are designed for non-technical users. Squarespace is slightly easier to learn because there's less to configure. You choose a template, add products, customize text and images, and launch. Shopify has more options and settings, which means a slightly steeper learning curve but more control.

For someone who wants to set and forget, Squarespace is simpler. For someone who wants to tinker and optimize, Shopify offers more depth.

Pricing

Squarespace plans start at $18/month and go up from there. You pay one flat fee that includes hosting, domain, and all features. Shopify starts at $29/month, but you'll also pay transaction fees (2.9% + $0.30 USD per sale, unless you process payments outside Shopify) unless you use Shopify Payments.

At small order volumes, Squarespace is cheaper. As you scale and increase sales, transaction fees on Shopify can add up. For a store doing $50,000 in annual revenue, transaction fees might cost you $1,500+ per year on Shopify; Squarespace would still be a flat monthly fee. Do the math for your expected volume.

Integrations and flexibility

Shopify wins decisively here. The Shopify App Store has thousands of integrations: email marketing, inventory management, fulfillment, accounting, analytics, and more. You can integrate almost any tool you need into your Shopify workflow.

Squarespace has integrations too, but fewer and less robust. If you need tight integration with specialized tools (advanced analytics, complex shipping logic, sophisticated email automation), Shopify is more flexible.

Scaling and growth

Both platforms scale in terms of traffic and order volume. But Shopify scales in terms of features. As your business grows and your needs become more sophisticated, Shopify's flexibility means you won't outgrow the platform. You can add complex workflows, custom functionality, and specialized integrations.

Squarespace can handle high traffic and high order volumes, but if you need specialized features, you'll eventually hit its limits. Many brands start on Squarespace and eventually move to Shopify as they scale.

The verdict

Choose Squarespace if you want a beautiful, simple store with minimal configuration and your needs are straightforward. Choose Shopify if you want flexibility, want to scale over time, or have specific integration or customization needs.

For most growth-minded brands, Shopify is the better long-term choice. But if you're just starting and want the fastest path to a beautiful store, Squarespace is excellent. We can help you evaluate both and make the right choice for your brand.
