Shopify: The market leader
Shopify powers over a million stores worldwide and is the platform of choice for brands across every vertical. It's secure, scalable, and comes with powerful built-in features: payment processing, shipping integrations, marketing tools, and an app ecosystem that lets you add almost any functionality you need.
Shopify works whether you're starting small or managing a large, complex operation. You'll pay transaction fees in addition to your monthly subscription, which can add up as you scale, but the platform itself is robust and trusted.
Squarespace: Beautiful templates, limited flexibility
Squarespace is perfect if you want a beautiful store out of the box with minimal setup. Templates are professionally designed, and the platform handles hosting, security, and updates. It's a good choice for smaller brands or those who prefer simplicity.
The trade-off: Squarespace is less flexible than Shopify. Customization is limited, third-party integrations are fewer, and as you grow and need specialized features, you'll hit constraints. But if your needs are straightforward, Squarespace is elegant and cost-effective.
WooCommerce: Maximum flexibility, requires technical skill
WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin that turns your WordPress site into a store. It's incredibly flexible and affordable to start, and you own your data and site entirely. This appeals to brands that need deep customization or already use WordPress.
The downside: you're responsible for hosting, security, updates, backups, and performance. You'll need developer support to build and maintain it. WooCommerce is powerful, but it requires technical expertise or ongoing developer investment.
BigCommerce: Enterprise-grade for scaling brands
BigCommerce is designed for brands with significant order volumes or complex operations. It includes advanced features like dynamic pricing, complex inventory management, and B2B capabilities. You don't pay transaction fees on top of your subscription, which can be an advantage at scale.
BigCommerce is more expensive and complex to set up than Shopify. It's best suited for established brands or those with specific enterprise needs.
How to choose
Start by asking: How complex is my product catalog? Do I need advanced customization? What's my budget? How do I plan to scale? If you want flexibility, strong integrations, and a large app ecosystem, Shopify is the answer. If you want simplicity and beautiful design, Squarespace. If you're already on WordPress or need maximum control, WooCommerce. If you're enterprise-scale, BigCommerce.
